Finding the Secret Window to Bologna's Hidden Canals

Venice is world famous for its beautiful canals, but few people realize that Bologna also boasts some stunning waterways! Though there aren’t nearly as many, the canals in Bologna are seriously stunning and really fun to try and find!

View from the top of the Asinelli Tower in Bologna, Italy! It's a long flight of stairs up to the observation deck, but the view is well worth it! Here's a shot looking down at Garisenda, the small of the 2 towers that make up Le Due Torre.

You see, most of the canals run behind private homes so they’re not visible from the street. That’s why you will sometimes hear the flow of water as you’re walking around, but won’t be able to locate where it’s coming from.

However, there are a few places in the city where you can see these canals. Running perpendicular to Via Piella is a beautiful waterway that you can see as you cross a small bridge. The photo below is the view you have from there, which is great in itself.

Bologna has several hidden canals running throughout the city...you just need to know where to find them! But that’s not the best part! When looking out at the water, turn around and you’ll notice that the view on the other side is blocked by a wall. Or so it would seem...

Walk to the other side and you will find a small square window that is usually shut with a nondescript plaque next to it. Unlatch it and push the window open and…voila! A beautiful view of the other side of the canal! If you search for this on Google Maps, it should come up as Finestrella. I saw so many people came to look just at the open side of the canal and nearly missed the secret window, so be sure not to skip that part!

This secret window on Via Piella opens up to a HIDDEN canal in Bologna! Check out this post to learn where to find it! Also, be sure to walk to the street on the other side of the canal so you can also get some photos looking back! If you look really closely at the photo below, you can see the tiny window in the distance!

Another canal runs just 1 block north of Finistrella, parallel to Via Capo di Luca. If you walk along that way, you’ll also have a glimpse of some of Bologna’s street art. The piece is pretty difficult to see due to overgrown shrubs on the surrounding gate, but it’s still a quirky bit of the city that I would highly recommend if you’re already in the area.
